Peer Pressure

Weekends are nice.  There are no rules, no place I have to be, nothing I have to do.

I can sleep late (but I never can!)

I don't have to work out (but I did!)

I can eat anything I want, no wait, that's not right.  Well, it's kinda right.  I can eat anything I want as long as I plan accordingly.

And I did but.......

We were at the lake this weekend.  First time in a couple of months.  I brought all the food for the meals and I knew we would be eating at our fave Mexican restaurant on Saturday night, so I planned for that.

Everything was going well, we were at the restaurant, I ignored the chips and salsa (which I consider a food group!) and I even ignored the queso that DH ordered and placed in front of me!

I ordered the shrimp salad which is delicious.  Grilled shrimp on a bed of mixed greens with chopped grilled zucchini.  Salad dressing on the side.  Water to drink.  If I'm still hungry after the salad then I will have a few chips.  I was in the zone.

Somehow the conversation turns to dieting and the lasagna I made on Friday that was veggie loaded(and very good!) and DH says "we appreciate that you like to try new and different recipes but I just like the simple stuff-like (Hamburger Helper and a list of not low-fat/calorie foods)" eek!  did he just say that!

My head dropped.

At first my thoughts were "I try so hard to make stuff that is healthy that he would like so why doesn't he appreciate that"

then "he's tired of eating healthy and is missing the not so healthy things we used to eat"

I think I've heard that line before.

I think I have said it many, many times over the years.  This is the line that started the de-railing.  Diets were started then given up.

It was strange to hear those words coming from someone else for a change.

This is not a diet, it's our way of eating.

I am going to continue to make food that has more veggies than fat and calories.  I will still bake goodies, I will make Hamburger Helper occasionally.  I'll make some of his old favorites but with a healthier spin, he'll never even notice!

Peer pressure be dammed!

You know what? I have a recipe for homemade "Hamburger Helper." Let me see if I can find it and I'll send it to you. At least that way you could make it healthy and he'd still get the taste.

I will try to remember what I said and then erased....

have you seen the whole grain hamburger helper? My hubby likes HH too, so I get that one, use skim milk, and ground turkey and slip in some veggies. Not great, but better :)

Stick to your guns girl. Just toss in an occasional unhealthy meal to keep hubby happy. :)

Wow... I think that would really hurt my feelings... Ouch.

Well, maybe you could ask your hub to pick on meal a week from the unhealthy list for you to make him. You can indulge on it too (if you want- and by that I mean a small serving with a big salad or something) and everyone gets some say in things. Also, I say "healthify" those things he loves without telling him- like mac and cheese with chicken broth, skim milk and less cheese and such.

Keep strong lady- and um I totally want that lasagna recipe is it on the site???

I think it would have hurt my feelings as well.
I cant lie.
BUT I HOPE Id have stepped back and been able to refocus as you did and realize that it has nothing really to do with me/my cooking.

It has taken me EONS to get my husband to change his tastebuds in the slightest and it seemingly happened allofasudden recently.

60 pounds lost later he swears hes never going back :)

This post broke my heart because it is so much easier to eat non-healthy foods than it is to eat healthy ones. It's much faster to eat junk than to fix quality meals. And when we take all that time and energy to make healthier meals and they're not appreciated, it makes it almost impossible to stay on the diet track. I've been there too. Our guys have as much difficulty accepting a new permanent way of eating as we do, don't they? And we have to have enough will power for two... how hard is that!!!
